What Changed in March 2026
Windsurf made two major changes to its windsurf ai pricing structure:
Credits are gone. Quotas are in. The old system gave you a monthly pool of credits (25 free, 500 on Pro). You could burn through your entire month’s allocation in one heavy session. The new system uses daily and weekly quotas that refresh automatically — so usage is spread out rather than front-loaded.
Pro went from $15 to $20. This puts Windsurf Pro at the same price as Cursor Pro. At $15, Windsurf had a clear price advantage. At $20, the decision between Windsurf and Cursor is now about features, not price.
Existing self-serve Pro and Teams subscribers were grandfathered into their old prices while moving to the new quota system. Enterprise customers continue under their existing billing agreements. The new pricing applies to new self-serve subscribers from March 2026 onward.
A new Max plan ($200/month) was also added for power users who need heavy usage limits.

One thing that’s easy to miss: Tab autocomplete is unlimited on every plan, including Free. Tab never touches your quota. Only Cascade (Windsurf’s AI agent for multi-file edits) and Chat with premium models consume from your daily/weekly allowance. This distinction matters a lot more than most pricing guides mention.
Is Windsurf AI Free?
Yes — with limits.
The Free plan gives you unlimited Tab autocomplete and light Cascade usage. That means you can use Windsurf as a code editor with AI-powered suggestions at no cost, indefinitely. The restriction is on Cascade, which is the feature that makes Windsurf genuinely powerful — multi-file edits, codebase reasoning, and autonomous coding tasks.
There’s also an option worth knowing about: BYOK (Bring Your Own Key). According to Windsurf’s model documentation, free and paid individual users can connect their own API keys — but only for certain supported models (currently limited to specific Claude model variants). When you use your own key, those requests don’t count against your Windsurf quota, though you pay the API provider directly.
BYOK can extend what you can do on the Free plan, but it’s not the same as getting unlimited free Cascade — it only works with supported models, and you’re paying your own API costs.
My take on the free tier: I opened Windsurf and tried a few Cascade sessions on the Free plan. Tab autocomplete worked immediately and felt unlimited — no interruption, no quota bar moving. But after about 3 Cascade interactions with a premium model, the usage bar had already dropped noticeably. Free is enough to evaluate whether Windsurf’s workflow suits you — Tab alone lets you code with AI suggestions indefinitely — but if you want Cascade to do the heavy lifting, you’ll hit the wall quickly.
Pro ($20/month) — The Main Individual Plan
Pro is where most individual users will land. You get standard usage quotas that refresh daily and weekly, access to all premium models (including Claude, GPT, and Windsurf’s own SWE-1 and SWE-1.5), Previews, and Deploys.
What “standard usage” means in practice: Windsurf doesn’t publish a simple per-day message count for Pro. According to their quota documentation, usage is measured as a daily and weekly token budget that varies by model and request size. In the app, you only see a percentage bar showing how much quota you’ve used — no exact numbers. Windsurf’s own SWE-1 models are more quota-efficient than third-party frontier models like Claude Sonnet or GPT-5 — and some models like SWE-1.5 are free and don’t consume quota at all.
The $15 → $20 change matters. At $15, Windsurf had a clear price advantage over Cursor ($20). At the same headline price, the decision depends more on workflow and included usage details than on sticker price alone.
Extra usage: If you hit your quota limit, Pro lets you continue at standard API prices for the model you’re using. Check your billing controls inside Windsurf to manage your spending limit.
Max ($200/month) — For Power Users
Max is new as of March 2026. It provides heavy usage limits for developers who use Cascade extensively throughout the day. If you’re consistently hitting Pro’s daily quota limits, Max removes that friction.
For most people evaluating windsurf ai pricing for the first time, Max is not the right starting point. Try Pro first and upgrade only if you find yourself regularly waiting for quota refreshes.
Teams ($40/user/month)
Teams gives each member standard usage (same as Pro), plus centralized billing, an admin dashboard with analytics, and priority support. Teams is billed per seat — check the current seat setup flow on Windsurf’s pricing page for details.
Purchased add-on credits are pooled across the team, while each user’s base quota is individual.
Enterprise adds SSO, RBAC, higher per-seat quotas, and hybrid deployment options. Enterprise customers remain on credit-based billing under their existing agreements. Pricing is custom — contact Windsurf directly.
What “Usage” Actually Means — Tab vs Cascade
This is the most important thing to understand about windsurf ai pricing, and most guides bury it.
Tab = Free. Always. Tab is Windsurf’s inline autocomplete — the suggestions that appear as you type. It’s unlimited on every plan, including Free. It never touches your quota.
Cascade = Where the quota goes. Cascade is Windsurf’s AI agent. It can read your entire codebase, make multi-file edits, reason about architecture, and execute multi-step tasks. Every Cascade interaction consumes quota.
Model choice affects quota consumption. Windsurf’s own models (SWE-1, SWE-1.5, SWE-1-mini) are designed to be quota-efficient. Third-party frontier models like Claude Sonnet 4.6 or GPT-5 consume significantly more quota per interaction — a single heavy session with a frontier model can use a noticeable chunk of your weekly allowance.
Daily and weekly refresh. Unlike the old credit system where you could spend everything in one day, quotas now refresh on both daily and weekly cycles. This prevents sprint-and-stop patterns and encourages more consistent usage.

- Just want to try it: Free — unlimited Tab, light Cascade, no payment needed
- Daily Cascade user, individual: Pro ($20/mo) — standard quota, all models
